Support A.J.R.1 for Fair Property Tax Reform and Increased Education Funding

To: Sen. Daly, Gov. Lombardo, Assembly Member Roth

From: A verified voter in Reno, NV

May 11

As a public school educator and proud member of the Washoe Education Association (WEA), I’m writing to express my strong support for Assembly Joint Resolution 1 (A.J.R.1), which would change the way property tax is calculated in Nevada by removing depreciation and updating our outdated tax structure. A.J.R.1 represents a long-overdue and essential step toward generating stable, sustainable revenue for our state—especially for our chronically underfunded education system. By modernizing how property tax is assessed, this measure ensures Nevada’s growing economy contributes fairly to the public good. In addition, I strongly support the mining tax increase from 5% of net proceeds to 7.75% of gross proceeds included in the resolution. For far too long, the mining industry has benefited from outdated tax loopholes while our schools have gone without the resources they need. This change would finally begin to align our tax structure with economic reality—and 25% of the resulting revenue is designated for education, which is critical. This is not just about numbers; it’s about priorities. Our students deserve better. Our educators deserve better. Nevada deserves a tax system that reflects our values and invests in our future. I urge you to support A.J.R.1 and help ensure it advances to the voters. Let us finally give Nevadans the opportunity to fix an inequitable system and move toward a stronger, better-funded future for our state. Thank you for your time and leadership.
