VOTE NO and OPPOSE Florida’s Proof-of-Citizenship Voter Registration Bills
To: Rep. Young, Sen. Bracy Davis
From: A verified voter in Ocoee, FL
March 21
Vote NO on H.B. 991 and the other proof-of-citizenship bills currently moving through the Florida state legislature. These bills solve a problem that doesn’t exist while creating real barriers for eligible voters.
Noncitizen voting is already illegal, and empirical studies consistently show it’s vanishingly rare. What these bills will actually do is make it harder for legitimate Floridian voters to register. Millions of Americans don’t have easy access to passports or certified birth certificates. Requiring these documents before someone can vote means disenfranchising citizens who were born here, grew up here, and have every right to participate in our elections.
This timing makes this worse. Implementing new registration requirements in the middle of election cycles will create chaos for election administrators and confusion for voters. Some of these bills would take effect immediately, upending systems that already work.
Florida doesn’t need to copy Trump’s SAVE America Act, which is stalled in the U.S. Senate for a good reason. Our state should focus on making voting more accessible for eligible citizens, not erecting new obstacles based on false claims about widespread voter fraud that has never happened.
