An Open Letter

To: Sen. Britt

From: A verified voter in Birmingham, AL

February 7

Katie, I saw your words in the New York Times about Liam Ramos and I thought, “I see the person who met with my sweet friend Minda and her daughter Riley, who is facing such an unbelievable hardship- that is the Katie Britt that I want to see more of” Now Donald Trump is moving to expedite his deportation and nobody understands why. He deserves a fair hearing for his asylum case. His father deserves a fair hearing for his asylum case. And the administration wants to deny them that to make some kind of political point… But they promised all of us they were only deporting criminals. There’s no way for a six-year-old to be a criminal. You know that in your heart and that’s why you teared up just talking about that sweet child. I’m crying too. You’ve looked in your heart as a mother and as a Christian and I know you have deep compassion for that child - now I ask you to look in your heart as a lawyer and Senator to demand that his family get the opportunity that we are supposed to be offering them. This is a nation of Laws, yes. But deporting people without any kind of due process is not the law. But this is also a country of Hope. We have a whole statue sitting in New York Harbour, welcoming people here. Offering them hope our ancestors had. Please speak up for this family and all of the innocent families detained or deported. We very well may be sending this child to his death and that’s unacceptable to any of us. Please Just- be the person I know you can be.
