I am writing to urge you to take a public and principled stand in support of the recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Susan Illston, which indefinitely halted Donald Trump’s attempt to impose mass layoffs and reorganizations across 22 federal agencies without congressional authorization.
This ruling is not only lawful—it is essential to defending our constitutional order. Judge Illston correctly stated that:
“Agencies may not conduct large-scale reorganizations and reductions in force in blatant disregard of Congress’s mandates, and a President may not initiate large-scale executive branch reorganization without partnering with Congress.”
Her injunction directly blocks the Trump administration’s unlawful push to consolidate executive power and bypass the legislative branch. As reported by NPR and Federal News Network, the court found that the president’s attempt to unilaterally restructure major components of the federal government would likely violate the separation of powers and undermine the very foundation of democratic governance.
This is not just about administrative procedure—it’s about protecting democracy from authoritarian overreach. The judiciary has done its job. Now Congress must do its part.
I respectfully urge you to:
1. Publicly support Judge Illston’s ruling and its constitutional grounding.
2. Demand that Donald Trump immediately comply with the injunction.
3. Reassert Congress’s authority in agency oversight, appropriations, and reorganization.
4. Hold public hearings, if necessary, to expose and block further attempts to circumvent the law.
No president is above the law, and no branch of government should be allowed to seize powers not granted by the Constitution. This ruling is a test of your commitment to the principles you swore to uphold.
Please act with courage and clarity.
