Please sign LD 1971, protect immigrants

To: Gov. Mills

From: A verified voter in Cumberland Center, ME

December 11

ICE is tearing communities apart, speading fear, violating the law, holding the people they detain-- only a tiny percentage of whom are criminals--in degrading dangerous conditions. I ask you to use your power as governor to rein in the abuses of ICE in Maine. Please do not block LD 1971, the "Act to Protect Workers in the State by Clarifying the Relationship of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies with Federal Immigration Authorities." This law would ensure that state and local law enforcement won't be able to stop people solely for immigration enforcement; officers would need to inform individuals of their rights before an immigration authority interviews them. Immigrants can, of course, still be arrested for crimes. You have already shown you can stand up to Trump.
