Dear Mayor Mamdani, I am writing as a New Yorker deeply disappointed by your decision not to properly welcome King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their recent visit to New York City. Whether one supports the monarchy or not is beside the point. As Mayor of New York, you were not acting merely as a private citizen expressing personal political views; you were representing the City of New York itself. In moments like these, diplomacy, grace, and civic leadership should rise above personal ideology. New York is one of the great international cities of the world. We are a global center of culture, finance, tourism, diplomacy, and commerce. The United Kingdom remains one of America’s closest allies, and the relationship between New York and the UK is historically and economically significant. At a time when divisions and political hostility increasingly dominate public life, many of us hope our leaders will model something better: respect, maturity, and the ability to engage constructively even amid disagreement. Your reported refusal to participate in a private meeting with King Charles, coupled with public demands regarding the Koh-i-Noor diamond, may have reflected your personal convictions regarding colonial history and the monarchy. However, the office of Mayor carries responsibilities larger than personal politics. A gracious welcome would not have required abandoning your beliefs; it simply would have demonstrated diplomatic professionalism and respect on behalf of the people of this city. Particularly now, when America’s relationships with many longstanding allies often feel strained and politicized at the national level, local leaders have an opportunity to demonstrate a different face of American leadership — one rooted in openness, civility, and mutual respect. New York should lead by example in that regard. I expect better from the Mayor of New York City. I believe many New Yorkers do as well. Respectfully,
