Trump’s “Total Authorization” Post: Jan 6 all over again

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Carbajal, Sen. Padilla

From: A verified voter in Lompoc, CA

July 12

Have you seen President Trump’s latest Truth Social post? Here is the full, unedited text: “I am on my way back from Texas, and watched in disbelief as THUGS were violently throwing rocks and bricks at ICE Officers while they were moving down a roadway in their car and/or official vehicle. Tremendous damage was done to these brand new vehicles. I know for a fact that these Officers are having a hard time with allowing this to happen in that it shows such total disrespect for LAW AND ORDER. Therefore, I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, and Border Czar, Tom Homan, to instruct all ICE, Homeland Security, or any other Law Enforcement Officer who is on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, to stop their car, and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so. I am giving Total Authorization for ICE to protect itself, just like they protect the Public. I never want to see a car carrying a Law Enforcement Officer attacked again! AUTHORIZATION IMMEDIATELY GRANTED FOR ARREST AND INCARCERATION. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” ⸻ Why this is a blatant violation and dog whistle for violence 1. Unlawful Use of Power • The President cannot personally authorize arrests or incarceration. That power resides with law enforcement under strict constitutional procedures—probable cause, warrants, & judicial oversight. This is a direct violation of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments. 2. A Dog-Whistle for Authoritarian Abuses • Phrases like “using whatever means is necessary” & “Total Authorization” are an open invitation for ICE agents to abandon all restraints—legal, moral, & ethical. This echoes the worst moments of January 6, when similar rhetoric inflamed violent action. 3. Dangerous Escalation • This reckless command could provoke the very chaos it purports to stop. Armed agents may escalate crowd-control situations into deadly force. Innocent people could be injured or killed. These are not hypotheticals—they are preventable horrors. 4. Risk of Civil Unrest or Worse • Congress must recognize the precedent: this kind of unchecked executive aggression can ignite widespread violence. It could spiral into another January 6-like eruption—or even, heaven forbid, a larger civil conflict. ⸻ This must end now Congress, you have both the authority and the duty to stop this. • Publicly condemn the statement. • Pass an immediate resolution limiting executive authority & protecting due process. • Removing the president from office- he shows no regard for constitutional limits. • Initiate impartial investigations into these orders and mandate legal safeguards to prevent military or enforcement overreach. The Constitution is under attack. This is a threat to democracy, rule of law, and the lives of Americans.
