HI I am your constituent from San Jose, California.
I am writing to express my strong opposition to H.R. 22, the SAVE Act. While the integrity of our elections is paramount, this legislation introduces unnecessary and burdensome requirements that threaten to disenfranchise millions of eligible American citizens.
Federal law already prohibits non-citizens from voting in federal elections, and the National Voter Registration Act currently requires applicants to attest to their citizenship under penalty of perjury.
By layering on a strict requirement for documentary proof of citizenship, H.R. 22 creates a bureaucratic "poll tax." Millions of Americans—particularly low-income individuals, students, and the elderly—do not have easy access to a passport or a birth certificate.
Furthermore, the bill places an unfair burden on women whose current legal names do not match their birth certificates due to marriage or divorce. Navigating the paperwork to "bridge" these records is time-consuming and costly. Instead of enhancing security, this bill risks purging eligible voters and intimidating election officials with harsh criminal penalties for administrative errors.
We should be focused on making it easier for eligible Americans to participate in our democracy, not building walls at the ballot box. I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 22.
