I am writing to urge you to take immediate action to oppose President Trump's threats to impose tariffs on Denmark and seven other European countries unless the United States is allowed to take control of Greenland. This crisis represents a dangerous departure from international norms regarding territorial sovereignty and threatens to fundamentally damage the relationship between the United States and our European allies.
Trump has threatened to impose these tariffs starting February 1st, making the next few days crucial for diplomatic intervention. When asked at a White House press briefing how far he would go to acquire Greenland, his response of "You'll find out" suggests an alarming willingness to escalate this situation. Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris has described this as "an existential moment" for EU-US relations, warning of a potential "entire breakdown" of the transatlantic partnership.
The economic consequences for American workers and businesses would be severe. The European Union is preparing to retaliate with tariffs hitting 93 billion euros of US trade if Trump follows through on his threats. This trade war would harm American exporters, manufacturers, and farmers who depend on European markets. Ireland alone is modeling scenarios showing 60,000 fewer jobs created over four years due to trade disruption.
Beyond economics, this situation undermines the principle of territorial sovereignty that has been fundamental to international order since World War II. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and threatening our NATO ally over territorial ambitions is both morally wrong and strategically reckless. It weakens the alliances we need to address genuine security challenges.
I urge you to publicly oppose these threats and work with colleagues to prevent this unnecessary crisis. Congress has constitutional authority over trade policy and should make clear that tariffs cannot be used to coerce territorial concessions from democratic allies.
