Protect U.S. Workers from Reckless Tariff Policies

To: Sen. Moran, Sen. Marshall, Rep. Estes

May 8

I am writing to strongly oppose President Trump’s reckless tariff strategy, including the recent auto tariffs, which are already leading to job losses, higher prices, and growing fears of a recession. Mack Trucks laid off 10% of its union workers in Pennsylvania, and Volvo announced 5% staff cuts at its South Carolina plant—both citing tariff-related uncertainty. These are not isolated cases. Workers across industries are now at risk due to a trade policy with no clear plan or protections (Vox, May 2025; New York Post, May 2025). Auto tariffs are just the beginning. Tariffs on consumer goods, electronics, and manufacturing inputs are raising prices for everyday families and small businesses. The Federal Reserve has warned these policies could slow growth and cause widespread job losses. S&P Global Mobility estimates auto sales could drop by 700,000 vehicles this year alone, and North American auto production could fall by over 1.2 million units (CBS News, May 2025). These effects will ripple across the economy and hit working families the hardest. Tariffs may have a role in trade policy, but without a clear strategy and strong protections for American workers and consumers, they do far more harm than good. Trump’s approach is erratic, retaliatory, and disconnected from long-term economic goals. This is not how a responsible government manages trade. I urge you to speak out and act now. Demand a coherent, transparent trade strategy that avoids pushing American families further into hardship and protects our economy from a preventable recession.
