Support Investigation into Constitutional Emoluments Clause Violations

To: Pres. Trump

From: A verified voter in Prosser, WA

February 5

I am writing to urge you to support opening a congressional investigation into whether President Donald Trump has violated the Foreign Emoluments Clause and Domestic Emoluments Clause of the United States Constitution. These constitutional provisions exist to prevent corruption and ensure that our president serves the American people rather than personal financial interests. From the moment President Trump took office, his refusal to divest from his business interests placed him in direct violation of these constitutional safeguards. The Foreign Emoluments Clause prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts, payments, or benefits from foreign governments without congressional consent. The Domestic Emoluments Clause prevents the president from receiving any compensation beyond the official salary from federal or state governments. These provisions were included by the framers specifically to prevent the kind of conflicts of interest we are witnessing. President Trump's continued ownership of hotels, golf courses, and other properties creates ongoing opportunities for foreign governments and domestic interests to curry favor by patronizing his businesses. This represents an unprecedented corruption of the Oval Office that undermines public trust in government and compromises the independence of presidential decision making. When foreign officials book rooms at Trump properties or domestic governments hold events at his venues, we cannot know whether policy decisions are being made in the national interest or in service of the president's personal financial gain. The Constitution provides Congress with the power and responsibility to investigate and address such violations through the impeachment process. I am asking you to support opening an investigation to determine whether sufficient grounds exist to impeach President Trump for these constitutional violations. Our system of government depends on elected officials upholding their oath to defend the Constitution, and these emoluments violations strike at the heart of our democratic principles. The integrity of our constitutional system requires accountability when violations occur. I urge you to take action on this critical matter.
