As your constituent and long-time admirer of your leadership, I want to thank you for consistently standing up to authoritarian abuses of power. Your courage and clarity have been invaluable in protecting democracy and human rights.
I write today with deep alarm about reports that senior officials in the Trump administration—Stephen Miller and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth—have discussed deploying the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army against citizens in Portland, Oregon. This isn’t policy debate; it’s an attempt to normalize the use of military force against Americans.
Heather Cox Richardson’s October 4th newsletter details the Signal exchange between Miller’s deputy and one of Hegseth’s senior advisors, outlining plans to use a combat unit meant for foreign war zones in a U.S. city. The cruelty, elitism, and disregard for the Constitution displayed by these men are staggering.
Please continue to lead by:
— Calling for the immediate resignations of Miller and Hegseth.
— Sponsoring or supporting legislation to prohibit federal funding for any unauthorized domestic military operation.
— Reinforcing the Posse Comitatus Act and ensuring Congress reasserts its authority over military deployment decisions.
Your leadership gives me hope that democracy can prevail even in dark times. Please keep raising your voice for all of us who believe in a just, humane, and constitutional America.
