Oppose Coyote Creek Agrivoltaic Ranch / Coyote Creek Solar Project

To: Asm. Hoover, Sen. Ashby, Gov. Newsom

From: A constituent in Sacramento, CA

December 19

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Coyote Creek Agrivoltaic Ranch / Coyote Creek Solar Project in eastern Sacramento County. While I fully support the expansion of clean and renewable energy to meet California’s climate goals, this particular project — sited in a highly sensitive ecological and cultural area — is not an appropriate or responsible location for large-scale solar development. The project would convert over 1,300–2,700 acres of native grassland, oak woodland, and vernal pool habitat into an industrial-scale utility site, resulting in the removal of thousands of mature native oak trees and significant fragmentation of critical wildlife corridors. ecosacramento.net +1 These oak woodlands are among the last remaining intact habitats in Sacramento County and support numerous plant and animal species that cannot be replaced once lost. ecosacramento.net Beyond the ecological impacts, this project threatens vital local open spaces, including the Prairie City State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) and surrounding public lands that attract recreationists and contribute millions in economic activity through events and tourism. California Four Wheel Drive Association The placement of solar panels and associated infrastructure adjacent to this treasured recreation area will degrade the scenic landscape, disrupt long-established uses, and undermine responsible land-use planning. There are far more suitable locations for renewable energy projects — such as brownfields, rooftops, parking structures, and previously disturbed lands — that would not destroy sensitive habitat, cultural sites, and mature native trees. sacramentoaudubon.org We must prioritize truly responsible solar siting that protects California’s natural heritage while advancing climate solutions. Additionally, many local tribes connected to the land have raised concerns about potential harm to cultural and ancestral sites, yet their voices have not been meaningfully addressed in this process. ecosacramento.net I respectfully urge you to use your authority to: Oppose further approvals or funding for the Coyote Creek project in its current location. Advocate for stronger state-level guidance or incentives directing large solar developments toward low-conflict sites. Support conservation and habitat protection measures that preserve native ecosystems and respect tribal cultural resources. California’s clean energy future should be one that balances renewable goals with environmental stewardship, habitat preservation, and protection of our cultural legacy. The Coyote Creek project, as currently proposed, undermines that balance. Thank you for your leadership and attention to this urgent matter.
