I am writing to urge you to oppose the USDA’s proposed ban on the purchase of certain foods with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. While this policy may be framed as a way to promote healthier eating, it fails to address the real issue facing many low-income Floridians: a lack of access to affordable, nutritious food.
The reality is that people do not buy unhealthy food simply because they receive food assistance. Many SNAP recipients live in food deserts where fresh produce, whole grains, and other healthier options are not readily available within a reasonable walking or bus distance. Grocery stores that offer nutritious foods are often inaccessible, leaving families to rely on corner stores or gas stations that primarily stock processed, packaged foods. Instead of improving nutrition, restricting food choices in SNAP will only make it harder for vulnerable families to put meals on the table.
Rather than punishing low-income individuals for circumstances beyond their control, Florida should focus on increasing access to healthy food. Investing in grocery stores in underserved areas, expanding farmers' markets that accept SNAP, and enhancing programs like Double Up Food Bucks would be far more effective ways to promote better nutrition.
If changes to the SNAP program move forward, how does the Florida Legislature plan to ensure that Floridians who rely on food assistance can still adequately meet their nutritional needs? What measures are being considered to expand access to healthy and affordable food in areas where fresh options are currently out of reach?
I urge you to take a stand against policies that unfairly stigmatize SNAP recipients and instead support solutions that address the true barriers to healthy eating. Please do everything in your power to oppose this USDA proposal and advocate for real, effective measures to help Floridians access nutritious food.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
