Federal Employees Are Not Political Targets

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the House GOP investigation into federal employee settlement agreements and the rhetoric surrounding these cases. The framing of these settlements as wasteful payouts to “bad employees” ignores the reality of why settlements happen in the first place. Agencies settle cases for the same reason private employers and litigants do: because litigation is expensive, time consuming, risky, and often reflects failures in management, retaliation, discrimination, or procedural misconduct that should never have occurred to begin with. Employment law experts themselves have pointed out that forcing every case into prolonged litigation would likely cost taxpayers far more in attorney fees, hearings, discovery, and lost productivity. Federal employees are not political props. They are public servants who deserve due process, workplace protections, and fair treatment under the law. Attempts to portray lawful settlements as suspicious simply because agencies sometimes lose, or choose to avoid greater liability, creates a chilling effect for whistleblowers and employees facing retaliation or abuse. This investigation also raises concerns that Congress is more focused on punishing the federal workforce than addressing the real problems affecting agencies: understaffing, politicization, declining morale, attacks on collective bargaining rights, and ongoing instability throughout government service. Taxpayer accountability matters. But accountability must apply to agency leadership and political appointees as well, not just rank and file employees who are exercising their legal rights. I urge you to reject efforts that undermine civil service protections or treat federal workers as expendable targets for partisan messaging. A functioning government depends on experienced, protected, and fairly treated public servants.
