Safeguard marriage equality, repeal Arizona's obsolete law
To: Sen. Gallego, Sen. Kelly

Same-sex marriage has been the law nationwide since the 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges. Despite this, some states still have old statutes or constitutional amendments defining marriage as between one man and one woman, which could potentially take effect again if Obergefell were overturned. At the federal level, the Respect for Marriage Act would need to be passed to ensure permanent nationwide protections for same-sex and interracial marriages, even if the Supreme Court reverses course on Obergefell. I urge you to take proactive steps to repeal Arizona's law restricting marriage to opposite-sex couples and support the Respect for Marriage Act. Removing this outdated provision would ensure LGBTQ+ Arizonans have equal rights and protections under state law, in line with the Supreme Court's binding precedent on marriage equality. Taking these steps would provide legal clarity and security for same-sex couples in our state and nationwide.
