Oppose Military Strikes Against Iran
To: Sen. McCann, Rep. Rogers
From: A constituent in Kalamazoo, MI
February 19
I am writing to urge you to publicly oppose any military strikes against Iran and to use your position to prevent the Trump administration from launching an attack that could occur as soon as this weekend, according to recent CBS News reporting. Military action against Iran would be catastrophic for American interests and global stability. The 2003 Iraq War, launched on similarly rushed timelines, cost over 4,400 American lives, injured more than 32,000 service members, and cost taxpayers over two trillion dollars. Iran has three times Iraq's population and significantly more sophisticated military capabilities. Any strike would likely trigger a wider regional conflict involving Iranian proxy forces across the Middle East, putting thousands of American troops stationed in Iraq, Syria, and the Gulf at immediate risk. The economic consequences would be severe for your constituents. Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which 21 percent of global petroleum passes daily. Such disruption would spike gas prices nationwide and destabilize markets already strained by inflation. American families cannot afford another Middle Eastern war that drains resources from domestic priorities like infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Diplomacy remains a viable path forward. The 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action successfully restricted Iran's nuclear program through verification and international cooperation. Rather than rushing toward military confrontation, the administration should pursue renewed diplomatic engagement with our European allies. I am asking you to take three specific actions immediately. First, issue a public statement opposing military strikes against Iran. Second, contact the White House directly to express congressional opposition to unilateral military action without proper authorization. Third, work with colleagues to assert Congress's constitutional authority over declarations of war. The American people did not elect leaders to stumble into another endless Middle Eastern conflict. I need to know where you stand on this urgent matter before any irreversible action is taken.
