Reject overreaching nonprofit surveillance bill HR 9495
To: Pres. Biden
From: A constituent in Farmington, NM
November 24
The proposed legislation undermines the rights of nonprofit organizations by granting the government excessive authority to unilaterally terminate their tax-exempt status based on vague accusations of providing "material support" to designated groups. This provision threatens the very existence of civil society organizations, stifling free expression and association. Such overreach sets a dangerous precedent and must be opposed to uphold constitutional principles. Furthermore, the bill fails to define key terms like "material support" or establish clear evidentiary standards, effectively allowing the revocation of tax exemptions through mere allegation rather than due process. Nonprofits could face arbitrary punishment for entirely lawful activities, chilling their ability to operate. Concerned citizens should voice staunch opposition to this affront on civil liberties. Instead of undermining the nonprofit sector, efforts should focus on combating actual threats through legitimate law enforcement channels with proper oversight. Preserving constitutional protections for associations must remain paramount. I urge rejecting this bill and its unacceptable infringement on fundamental rights.
