The Laken Riley Act is a deeply concerning piece of legislation that would impose sweeping and unconstitutional changes to our immigration system under the guise of addressing undocumented immigrants convicted of crimes. This bill would penalize not just undocumented immigrants, but also legal residents, refugees, and even children by subjecting them to indefinite detention without due process. It would grant excessive power to states and federal courts to overrule the executive branch's immigration policies and mandate detention of individuals never convicted of a crime. Moreover, the Act contains provisions allowing courts to issue blanket travel bans against entire nations, which could spark diplomatic crises and disrupt business, academic, and medical travel. Such an extreme measure far exceeds any reasonable response to the stated goal of keeping Americans safe from crime committed by a small number of undocumented immigrants. I urge you to reject this constitutionally dubious and inhumane legislation. Rather than detaining masses of immigrants indiscriminately, we should pursue targeted and fair policies that uphold due process while maintaining border security. The Laken Riley Act goes too far and must not become law.
