Urgent: Opposition to SB 76 and the Expansion of ICE Operations in Indiana

To: Sen. Young, Sen. Banks

From: A constituent in Elkhart, IN

February 1

Urgent: Opposition to SB 76 and the Expansion of ICE Operations in Indiana I am writing to you today as a concerned constituent to express my strong opposition to the Immigration Enforcement Act (SB 76) and the continued expansion of ICE detention centers within our state. This legislation, which recently cleared the Indiana Senate, threatens the safety and trust of our communities. I urge you to reconsider this path for the following reasons: Erosion of Community Trust: Forcing local law enforcement to act as federal immigration agents undermines the vital relationships between police and immigrant communities, making victims of crimes less likely to seek help. Strained Resources: Our county jails are already overcrowded. Mandating additional holds for ICE detainers places an unfunded administrative and financial burden on local taxpayers. Constitutional Concerns: Legal experts have warned that requiring jails to hold individuals without new warrants may lead to Fourth Amendment violations, exposing the state and local governments to costly litigation. Humanitarian Impact: The move to provide up to 1,000 beds for ICE at the Miami Correctional Facility and the use of Camp Atterbury for deportations is a departure from Indiana values of compassion and dignity. Instead of doubling down on enforcement-only policies that foster racial profiling, I ask that you support solutions that keep families together and prioritize the safety of all Hoosiers. Please vote against SB 76 and work to shut down these detention initiatives.
