Dear Representatives,   I am writing to express my grave concerns and demand your immediate attention on the arrest of Wisconsin Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan. This deeply disturbing event suggests a significant abuse of power and poses a dangerous threat to democracy in the United States. Judge Dugan was arrested by federal agents for allegedly helping a defendant, Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, avoid an unlawful ICE detention by guiding him out of the courthouse through a jury room. This action took place without a judicial warrant, which ICE agents did not provide—a clear violation of constitutional norms. Instead of being recognized for upholding the law and protecting due process, Judge Dugan has been criminalized by the very government tasked with safeguarding our rights. Her arrest is not merely a local legal issue; it is a troubling signal of authoritarianism. It undermines the independence of our judiciary, intimidates judges across the nation, and weakens the balance of power that is essential to our democracy. Legal experts and elected officials, including Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers and Senator Bernie Sanders, have condemned this abuse, understanding the arrest as political retaliation disguised as law enforcement. This situation cannot go unchallenged. I urge you to take the following actions: 1. Publicly condemn the arrest of Judge Dugan and affirm the constitutional independence of the judiciary. 2. Investigate the conduct of ICE and the FBI in this incident. 3. Enact protections to guarantee that judges can perform their duties free from political persecution and unlawful federal overreach.   The erosion of democratic norms does not occur suddenly; it happens through silence and complicity.
