Is enough enough yet?
To: Sen. Banks, Sen. Young, Rep. Houchin
From: A constituent in Bloomington, IN
September 4
I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned constituent who is increasingly alarmed by the actions of President Donald J. Trump. The recent news has filled me with a profound sense that our nation's democratic norms, rule of law, and economic stability are under direct threat. My question is simple, and it is one I believe you have a constitutional duty to answer: When is enough enough? The examples are numerous and severe: · Economic Policy for the Powerful: The so-called "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act" is a stark transfer of wealth from the working and middle classes to the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates the bottom 10% of earners will lose $1,200 annually while millionaires receive tens of thousands in tax breaks, all while programs like Medicaid and food assistance are gutted. This is not fiscal responsibility; it is a targeted assault on the most vulnerable. · Erosion of the Rule of Law: The recent unilateral military strike on a vessel in international waters, described by legal experts like Ryan Goodman and Mary Ellen O’Connell as a potential violation of international law and an act of "murder," is terrifying. The administration’s justification was so thin that the Secretary of State specifically noted it was done "on the president’s orders," signaling a concerning move toward unchecked executive power. · Authoritarian Threats: The President’s rhetoric about being a "dictator," his unauthorized deployment of troops to American cities against the wishes of state governors, and his insistence that courts cannot check his power on tariffs are direct challenges to our system of checks and balances. · Blatant Corruption and Self-Enrichment: The Trump family’s immediate financial gains, amassing billions from a cryptocurrency launch and new business ventures while crafting policy, create an unmistakable appearance of corruption. The report that a cabinet secretary’s former company is betting on the outcome of that secretary’s own policies is a symbol of an administration that governs for its own profit. · Obstruction of Justice: The active effort to block the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files, including dismissing Congress early to avoid dealing with it, suggests a fear of transparency. When a president works to conceal information about his associations with a convicted sex trafficker, it demands congressional oversight. What specific actions will you take to initiate oversight and investigations into these matters? At what point does this pattern of behavior meet the constitutional threshold of "high crimes and misdemeanors" for which impeachment is the intended remedy? Silence and inaction in the face of such conduct are a dereliction of your duty. The stability of our nation and the preservation of our democracy depend on leaders who will uphold the Constitution without fear or favor. I expect a detailed response outlining your position on these critical issues.
