Reject IA HSB158

To: Gov. Reynolds, Sen. Weiner, Rep. Zabner

From: A constituent in Iowa City, IA

February 28

The proposed legislation, IA HSB158, aims to restrict minors from attending drag shows and impose penalties for violations. However, such measures could infringe upon artistic expression and parental rights. Drag performances are a longstanding tradition in LGBTQ+ culture, allowing for creative self-expression and celebration of diversity. Attending these events can foster understanding, acceptance, and inclusivity from a young age. Penalizing parents for exposing their children to drag shows infringes on their rights to raise their children as they see fit. Rather than enacting bans, efforts should be made to promote open dialogue, education, and mutual respect for different communities and art forms. Embracing diversity and protecting artistic freedom would better serve the interests of all Iowans.
