At present, there are no formal rules requiring lawmakers to disclose serious medical conditions, nor any official procedures for determining when a member is medically incapacitated and should be temporarily or permanently relieved of duties. This gap leaves the public without transparency and leaves Congress without a functional mechanism to ensure continuity of governance. This situation must be rectified. Congress should establish clear, enforceable standards for medical disclosure and create a nonpartisan process for assessing incapacity. These reforms are essential to maintaining public trust and ensuring that elected officials can fulfill the responsibilities of their office.
