An Open Letter

I write this morning to reaffirm the points I’ve made in previous letters: Congress must start upholding the oath of office each member swore to defend. The American people are watching, and we are deeply concerned. 1. Donald Trump has publicly floated the idea of running for a third term. Whether he said it jokingly or not, the U.S. Constitution—through the 12th and 22nd Amendments—makes it clear this is not allowed. When Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced a resolution reaffirming Trump’s ineligibility, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) objected. Why are so many Republicans unwilling to stand up to Trump, even on such a fundamental constitutional matter? 2. Where is the GOP’s concern for real issues affecting Americans? The stock market volatility, worsening poverty, challenges faced by the disabled, shrinking opportunities for children, and unfair tax burdens on the middle and lower classes should all be top priorities. Dangerous tariffs have hurt more than helped. Does anyone in the Republican Party care? 3. Recent developments in congressional budget control are troubling. Based on the news reports I’ve read, Congress has essentially handed more power over the purse strings to Donald Trump. Do you honestly believe that if you try to reclaim that power later, he’ll give it back willingly? 4. Millions of Americans, including my father, have lost money in the stock market downturn. Retirement funds and future plans are being wiped out. Yet there’s a disturbing silence from Washington about this real financial pain. 5. You may not realize this, but you should: the public is paying attention. Do you or your staff ever read open letters or look at approval ratings on platforms like Resist.bot? They’re not good. And based on the letters being sent, it’s clear many of you are not acting in alignment with your constituents’ concerns. 6. Never forget—you work for the people. Not for Donald Trump. 7. And lastly, there’s something alarming that needs to be said. Several reports—including comments from a well-known SNL actor—have suggested that Donald Trump may not be able to read or understand the Constitution. If this is even partially true, it’s a serious national concern. How can someone defend a document they don’t comprehend? In closing, I urge you once again: honor your Oath of Office. Take it seriously. Put country before party. The people are watching—and we are demanding better.
