An Open Letter

To: Gov. Ferguson, Sen. Stanford, Rep. Kloba, Rep. Duerr

From: A verified voter in Woodinville, WA

March 9

I expect my sensitive location data to be kept private, and to be able to travel to work, school, worship, or a political rally without that information being sold to the highest bidder, or possibly used against me. That’s why I’m urging you to please introduce and pass the State Location Privacy Act, a model bill from Consumer Reports that ensures my geolocation data is never collected or sold without my permission. Right now, there is no national law banning the sale of Americans’ location data collected via cell phone apps. So states are moving to protect residents, with three states already passing laws that make sure location data can never be sold to others. Please help take the lead on this important issue, and introduce the State Location Privacy Act. You can find more details on this model bill at CR.org/LocationPrivacy.
