Reasserting Congressional War Powers Regarding Iran

To: Rep. Garcia, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Long Beach, CA

April 2

I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to immediately reassert the constitutional authority of Congress regarding the administration’s military excursions into Iran. Under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, the power to declare war is granted solely to the legislative branch. The framers intentionally designed this check to prevent the Executive from unilaterally committing the nation to conflict. Current military actions without a formal declaration or a specific Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) bypass this essential democratic process. I am particularly alarmed by the projected economic fallout. A conflict of this magnitude threatens to disrupt global energy markets and supply chains, potentially decimating our domestic economy through runaway inflation and debt. We cannot afford the human or financial cost of an unauthorized war. To date, I do not believe Congress has done enough to check this overreach. I ask that you take a stand by supporting legislation that: 1. Explicitly prohibits funding for unauthorized military operations in Iran. 2. Repeals outdated AUMFs that are being used as a "blank check" for executive action. 3. Demands a full public debate and a recorded vote before any further escalation occurs. Our system of checks and balances only works if you choose to exercise your power. I look forward to your response regarding the steps you will take to uphold the Constitution and protect our economy.
