Congressional Oversight of DHS and ICE and Executive Overreach Concerns
To: Sen. Padilla, Sen. Schiff
From: A verified voter in North Hollywood, CA
January 26
I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to take stronger action to rein in the DHS and ICE. Recent actions in Minnesota — including multiple fatal shootings — have sparked widespread outrage, widespread protests, and urgent calls for accountability from local and national leaders. Everyone involved including their leaders must be held accountable for these unconscionable actions.
I believe you should seriously consider withholding funding for DHS until meaningful oversight, accountability, and reform are in place. NO government agent should be permitted to shoot and kill Americans with impunity. The degree of infringement on constitutional rights and the use of force in these operations demands immediate review. While I am concerned about potential political consequences, including changes to the filibuster, inaction is not acceptable.
Beyond ICE, I am alarmed by other examples of unchecked executive overreach, from the situation with "buying" Greenland to withdrawing from the WHO and threats of ending our commitment to NATO. These actions undermine our global leadership and national security.
Congress is a co-equal branch of government and MUST act as a check on the executive. I urge you to work with your colleagues to demand transparency, accountability, and a renewed commitment to the rule of law.
Please act with the urgency and courage this moment demands.
