Urgent: Stop the U.S. Military Escalation with Venezuela
To: Rep. García
From: A constituent in Chicago, IL
January 8
I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate, responsible action to stop the current military escalation between the United States and Venezuela.
Recent U.S. military actions, including strikes and operations resulting in the detention of Venezuelan leadership and the loss of life on both sides, have escalated a crisis in the region with significant humanitarian, legal, and geopolitical consequences. Venezuelan authorities report casualties, mourning, and heightened tensions following these operations.
The U.S. Constitution clearly grants Congress, not the executive, the authority to authorize acts of war. Independent international legal experts have raised concerns that unilateral military intervention without broad international support or clear congressional authorization violates both domestic and international law.
Moreover, large-scale military engagement risks provoking a broader conflict, endangering civilians and destabilizing an already fragile region.
As your constituent, I respectfully urge you to:
Demand transparency and oversight from the executive branch regarding any military actions involving Venezuela, including justification, legal authority, and objectives.
Support or introduce measures that require express congressional approval for further military involvement abroad, in accordance with the War Powers Resolution and the Constitution.
Promote diplomatic and humanitarian solutions over military escalation, working with allies and regional partners to reduce tensions and support peaceful conflict resolution.
Call for an immediate de-escalation of armed operations and a commitment to protect civilian lives, uphold international law, and pursue negotiated outcomes.
Now is the moment for Congress to assert its constitutional role and to pursue peace and accountability. I respectfully request a public statement outlining your position and the steps you will take to address this matter.
