USDA’s $11.3M Cut to Iowa’s Local Food Programs Screws Over Farmers & Families

To: Sen. Ernst, Sen. Grassley, Rep. Feenstra

From: A verified voter in Ames, IA

March 11

What the hell are you thinking? Cutting USDA programs that bring locally grown food into schools and food banks? You’re screwing over Iowa’s farmers, our kids, and families in need—all in one move. This is the exact opposite of conservative values. Republicans are supposed to support small businesses and local economies. This program kept Iowa farmers profitable by getting their food into local schools and food banks. Instead of relying on big out-of-state corporations, schools could buy fresh, local produce. Food banks got access to healthier food to help struggling families. Now you’re killing that. How does that make sense? And let’s talk about food banks. Conservatives always argue that community solutions are better than big government welfare. This program did exactly that—it gave local food pantries the resources they needed without forcing more people onto SNAP and other federal aid. Cutting it doesn’t save money. It just shifts the cost elsewhere and hurts real people in the process. You cannot claim to support farmers, small businesses, or rural America while pushing policies that actively hurt them. If you actually cared about Iowa’s economy and families, you’d be fighting to keep these programs funded. Instead, you’re backing policies that make it harder for our farmers to sell their products and harder for families to put food on the table. Stop being an out of touch DC elitist. Come to Iowa and hold some town halls. Face us and take accountability for your actions. Act. Now.
