Feeding Iowa’s Children
To: Gov. Reynolds
From: A constituent in Ames, IA
January 7
It’s deeply disappointing to see that, once again, you’ve refused federal funding that would provide EBT benefits to children in need during the summer months. Your continued push for the food box program is insulting and misguided. By implying that only wealthy families deserve to choose what food to feed their kids, you’re sending a troubling message about how you view Iowa’s poor.
Last year, you justified this decision by citing concerns about obesity, but I’m fully aware that EBT benefits can only be used for approved food items. Families already face restrictions on what they can buy, and there’s no evidence to support the idea that handing out pre-selected food boxes will combat obesity.
Furthermore, EBT benefits don’t just help families—they support local businesses. When families shop with EBT, money flows into grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and other retailers across Iowa. In contrast, your food box program only benefits the companies you’ve partnered with, funneling taxp ayer dollars into their pockets. That doesn’t just feel wrong—it feels corrupt.
As a Christian, I take seriously the teaching to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Families in need deserve dignity and the ability to make choices for their children, just like anyone else. Your refusal to accept federal funding that could feed kids in the summer is not only a failure of leadership but also a betrayal of the values you claim to uphold.
It’s time to put Iowa’s children and families first. Please reconsider your stance and accept the federal money to help feed kids.
