Congress must safeguard free press and democratic principles.

To: Sen. Cramer, Rep. Fedorchak, Sen. Hoeven

From: A constituent in Horace, ND

May 7

The recent attacks on the media represent an alarming threat to freedom of speech and democracy in our nation. Journalism plays a vital role in keeping citizens informed, enabling them to make decisions in the best interest of the country. Without a free and independent press, the risk of authoritarianism and the erosion of democratic principles increases significantly. History has shown that when the press is silenced, it paves the way for the consolidation of power and the suppression of dissenting voices. As a nation that has long championed liberty, it is imperative that Congress takes a firm stance in defending the fundamental right of journalism to hold those in power accountable. Failing to do so would undermine the foundations of our democracy and signal a concerning shift towards the very autocratic tendencies we have historically opposed. Congress must act decisively to condemn these attacks and reaffirm its commitment to protecting the freedom of the press, a cornerstone of our democratic society.
