Fight to restore Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments to their full protected boundaries. On July 13, 2026, President Trump issued proclamations stripping nearly 3 million acres from monument protections combined — cutting Bears Ears by approximately 91% and Grand Staircase-Escalante by approximately 90%. These are not modest adjustments. They are the near-total erasure of two of the most significant protected landscapes in the American West.
These cuts go far beyond even the 2017 Trump proclamations, which were already legally contested and widely condemned. The lands being stripped of protection contain irreplaceable archaeological sites, Indigenous cultural heritage, and ecosystems that cannot be recovered once they are opened to extraction. Congress has the authority and the responsibility to push back. Support legislation to restore these monument boundaries and make clear that public lands held in trust for all Americans are not available for political dismantling.
