Uphold Senate's oversight role for Cabinet nominations

To: Sen. Hickenlooper, Sen. Bennet

November 14, 2024

The cabinet picks the President-elect has made to date are wholly unqualified for the positions for which they have been nominated. A key principle of our democratic system is the separation of powers, which includes checks and balances on executive appointments through the Senate's advice and consent role. Allowing the President to bypass this process and make unilateral recess appointments would undermine this crucial system of accountability. We must uphold the Senate's constitutional duty to vet and approve Cabinet nominees through robust oversight and public hearings. This ensures that only qualified, ethical individuals committed to serving the best interests of the nation are confirmed to these powerful positions. Enabling the President to circumvent this process risks installing unvetted, unqualified loyalists who could abuse their authority without proper scrutiny. For the sake of good governance and accountability, I urge you to reject any attempts to allow recess appointments and instead insist on the Senate's prescribed role in thoroughly vetting all Cabinet nominees.
