Why Are You Sneaking in Shady Provisions to Get Yourself a Payday?
To: Sen. Hawley, Sen. Schmitt
From: A verified voter in Kansas City, MO
November 15
I want to know why you thought it was acceptable to hide a shady provision in the shutdown bill that would allow you—and a handful of other senators—to sue the Department of Justice for up to half a million dollars each. At taxpayers’ expense. During a shutdown. While Americans are struggling and federal employees aren’t getting paid.
What exactly made you think this was acceptable? Do you honestly believe slipping in a secret payout for yourself is going to help you get reelected? Because from where I’m sitting, it looks corrupt as hell. While families are scraping by, you decided the priority was making sure you and your colleagues could cash out if the DOJ accessed your phone records during an investigation.
You are supposed to represent the people of this state—not line your pockets with taxpayer money. Why are you more concerned with protecting yourself than protecting the people who elected you? Why does every “solution” you support somehow benefit you and your inner circle?
I want an explanation for why you supported—or failed to stop—this sneaky, self-serving provision. And I want to know why you think you deserve a massive payout when the rest of the country is dealing with the fallout of your party’s inability to govern.
Missourians are paying attention. And we are tired of the corruption, the excuses, and the grifting. Every day you behave like this is one more day your reelection chances crumble.
Explain yourself.
