I am writing to urge the Nevada Legislature to prioritize educators and public education by renewing and extending SB231 in the upcoming 2025 legislative session. Passed in 2023, SB231 created a crucial matching fund program to support teacher raises through contract negotiations. However, the funding authorized by this legislation is set to expire at the end of June.
This program has provided critical support for Nevada’s hard-working teachers (including myself), ensuring they are compensated fairly for the invaluable work they do. Competitive pay is not only a matter of respect but a necessary step to address teacher shortages, retain talented educators, and recruit new professionals into our classrooms.
Allowing this support to lapse would jeopardize our ability to provide quality education for Nevada’s students. Renewing and extending the matching fund program would send a clear message that Nevada values its educators and is committed to strengthening its public schools.
Investing in our teachers is an investment in the future of Nevada’s children. I urge you to champion this issue and ensure SB231 continues to provide the resources and respect our education professionals deserve.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
