Please intervene to stop the planned mass killing of 226 Canada geese at Lady Ann Lake in Madison's Edgewater neighborhood. The HOA has hired a USDA subcontractor to gas the birds with carbon monoxide — a method board member Jack Hollum, who voted against the cull, described as "agonizing," since geese can hold their breath for roughly 45 minutes.
Beyond the cruelty, this approach simply doesn't work. The HOA ran this same operation in 2020, and a new flock replaced the culled one entirely. Residents like Natalie Tidwell and David Field — who launched a petition opposing the kill — have pointed out that humane alternatives like noise deterrents and relocation haven't been genuinely exhausted. Gassing 226 federally protected birds only to face the same problem years later is not wildlife management. It's a cycle of preventable killing.
I want you to use whatever authority your office holds to halt this cull and push for a real, humane solution. Constituents are already protesting in the streets. This is the moment to stand with them.
