Congress Must Reclaim Its Constitutional Authority Over Tariffs

To: Rep. McClintock, Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla

From: A verified voter in El Dorado Hills, CA

September 8

Tariffs are a tax on Americans, and Congress needs to take back its constitutional authority over trade policy. The chaotic, legally uncertain way these tariffs have been imposed makes it impossible for businesses and families to plan. Hiring freezes, shelved investments, and higher prices at the register are the direct result. That's not a trade strategy. That's economic self-sabotage. The damage is especially senseless when it's aimed at allies like Canada, one of our largest trading partners. Retaliatory tariffs don't hurt foreign governments. They hurt American workers and consumers. And when tariff refunds do get issued, they flow overwhelmingly to large corporations as a windfall, while ordinary Americans just keep paying more for everything. Congress didn't hand the executive branch unlimited power to tax Americans through trade policy, and it's past time to act like it. Reclaim that authority now.
