Protect America’s Wild Horses

To: Sen. Armstrong, Rep. Bice, Sen. Lankford

From: A verified voter in Edmond, OK

August 23

I’m asking you to take action to protect America’s wild horses from slaughter. Wild horses and burros are being rounded up and removed from federally managed public lands across the American West. These animals are supposed to be protected under federal law, yet after removal, our system does not do enough to ensure that they never end up in the slaughter pipeline. That is unacceptable. These horses are part of America’s natural and cultural heritage. We should not be spending taxpayer money to round them up, remove them from the wild, and then operate a system in which any of them can ultimately be sold or transported for slaughter. Please support the SAFE Act and other federal measures that would permanently prohibit horse slaughter for human consumption and prevent American horses from being exported to other countries for slaughter. I also urge you to strengthen protections and accountability for wild horses after they are removed from federal lands, including meaningful safeguards that prevent buyers or intermediaries from sending them into the slaughter pipeline. This should not be a partisan issue. America’s wild horses deserve genuine federal protection, and taxpayers deserve to know that animals removed under a federal program will not ultimately be slaughtered. Please act to close these loopholes and protect America’s wild horses.
