Oppose HB 121 and HB 122 (LGBTQ+ Restrictions)

To: Gov. Landry, Sen. Foil, Rep. Davis

April 11

Dear Louisiana Legislators, I am writing to express my strong opposition to House Bill 121 and House Bill 122, which seek to restrict the rights and freedoms of LGBTQ+ students and teachers in Louisiana's public schools. These bills are discriminatory and go against the principles of inclusivity, diversity and equal treatment that should be the foundation of our education system. Prohibiting the use of a student's chosen name and pronouns, and limiting discussions of gender identity and sexual orientation, will only serve to marginalize and stigmatize LGBTQ+ youth. This can have devastating consequences on their mental health and well-being, as studies have shown that transgender and nonbinary youth already face high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation. Furthermore, these bills would prevent teachers from being able to create a safe and supportive environment for all students, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. This is unacceptable and goes against the core mission of public education. I urge you to reconsider your support for these harmful and discriminatory bills. Louisiana's LGBTQ+ students and teachers deserve to feel respected, accepted, and empowered in their schools. Please vote against HB 121 and HB 122 and instead focus on policies that promote inclusivity and equality for all.
