I am writing to urge you to vote against the SAVE Act, which the House passed for the second time in April 2025. This legislation would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote, creating unnecessary barriers for millions of eligible American voters.
As a married woman, I am deeply concerned about how this bill would directly impact my ability to vote. The SAVE Act would require Americans who have changed their names after marriage to secure updated documentation every time they register. This creates a significant burden on married citizens who have already proven their eligibility and are legally registered voters. It is already illegal for noncitizens to register and vote in federal or state elections, and voters in every state are already required to affirm or verify their citizenship status when registering. This bill solves no actual problem.
The SAVE Act would disproportionately harm specific communities beyond married citizens. Military families would need to present documentation every time they re-register when they move to new duty stations. Disaster victims who have lost their documents would face additional obstacles while trying to rebuild their lives. Most troubling, citizens of color are three times more likely than white citizens to lack the necessary documents or face difficulties accessing them. While approximately half of all American adults possess a passport, two-thirds of Black Americans do not.
This legislation is voter suppression disguised as election security. It would create barriers where none are needed and disenfranchise eligible voters who have every right to participate in our democracy. The requirement for documentary proof of citizenship is redundant, divisive, and discriminatory in its impact.
I ask you to stand with voters and oppose the SAVE Act when it comes before the Senate. Protect the voting rights of married citizens, military families, disaster survivors, and all eligible Americans.
