I am writing to express my strong opposition to the use of National Guard troops in U.S. cities to perform police functions such as arrests and crowd control. The recent federal judge’s ruling declaring Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles illegal affirms what many Americans already know: using military forces for domestic policing is unconstitutional, undemocratic, and deeply dangerous.
Despite this ruling, Donald Trump has announced his intention to deploy federal troops to Chicago and Baltimore under the guise of “combating crime”—a move made in defiance of local and state opposition and in blatant disregard for legal and constitutional limits on federal power. This is not about public safety; it is about political control and intimidation.
Let’s be clear: this is a continued federal overreach and a gross abuse of executive power. It is part of a broader pattern of authoritarian behavior by Trump, including his unlawful federal takeover of D.C.'s police and other violations of the Constitution that amount to high crimes.
Congress cannot remain silent. In the face of clear constitutional violations, non-action is equivalent to complicity. Every day that Congress fails to confront these abuses is a day of guilt by association. I urge you to speak out forcefully against the militarization of our cities and to use every tool at your disposal—including legislation, oversight, and impeachment if necessary—to hold Trump accountable and protect the rights of the American people.
The Constitution demands action. Your constituents demand accountability. I urge you to act now.
