Urge Immediate Action to End Government Shutdown and Protect Americans
To: Sen. Kelly, Sen. Gallego
From: A constituent in Phoenix, AZ
October 2, 2025
I am deeply concerned about the ongoing federal government shutdown and its devastating impact on our nation. This crisis, stemming from a budget dispute between Republicans and Democrats, is causing unnecessary harm to hundreds of thousands of American families and our economy.
The consequences of this shutdown are severe and far-reaching. Approximately 750,000 federal workers—40% of the federal workforce—are facing unpaid leave. While essential services like border protection and air traffic control continue, many vital functions are at risk. National parks, museums, and crucial research projects face closure or reduction. The shutdown threatens to disrupt travel, delay passport processing, and jeopardize education funding.
The economic toll is equally alarming. Experts estimate that each week of the shutdown could reduce our economic growth by 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points. This is not a theoretical concern—it's a real threat to our nation's prosperity and the financial well-being of countless Americans.
I am particularly troubled by President Trump's suggestion to use this shutdown as an opportunity for further government cuts. This approach seems to prioritize political maneuvering over the welfare of the American people. On the other hand, I support the Democrats' efforts to extend health insurance tax credits and reverse Medicaid cuts, which are critical for many Americans' access to healthcare.
We cannot afford a repeat of the 2018 shutdown, which lasted an unprecedented 35 days. The current impasse demonstrates a failure of leadership and a disregard for the American people's well-being. I urge you to take immediate action to end this shutdown. Act now to reopen the government by working with Democrats to do what is right for Americans. Support federal workers, and prevent further damage to our economy and public services.
It's imperative that Trump and Republicans stop abusing their powers and the American people. The American people deserve better than to be used as bargaining chips in political negotiations. Please prioritize the needs of your constituents and the nation as a whole. Work across party lines to reach a compromise that funds our government, protects essential services, and addresses critical issues like healthcare access.
