Prioritize education funding, reject $351M cuts harming Ohio students

The proposed budget from the Ohio House GOP represents a direct threat to the future of public education in our state. Slashing $351 million from K-12 funding is a severe blow that will have devastating consequences for school districts across Ohio, including Lorain City Schools. This move creates a massive $574 million shortfall from the $800 million experts estimate is truly needed to adequately fund our schools in 2025. Lorain City Schools is already operating on tight budgets and struggling to meet the unique needs of its urban student population despite receiving slightly above-average per-pupil funding. Further cuts will only exacerbate existing financial strains and force difficult choices that compromise the quality of education. Moreover, the impacts will ripple across Lorain County, straining other districts grappling with aging infrastructure and levy failures. Fully funding public education, as Governor DeWine proposed, is an investment in the future of our children and communities. Underfunding risks failing an entire generation of students, perpetuating cycles of poverty and diminishing economic prospects. As representatives, a central responsibility is ensuring equitable access to quality education - a hallmark of a thriving society. I urge you to reject these draconian cuts and prioritize fully funding Ohio's public schools in line with the $800 million needed. Our children's futures depend on providing them with the educational resources and opportunities they deserve. Investing in education is investing in the long-term well-being of our state. Please stand up for Ohio's students and teachers by advocating for a budget that robustly supports public education.
