Defend free press and democracy from administration attacks

To: Rep. Self, Sen. Cornyn, Sen. Cruz

From: A constituent in Princeton, TX

April 30

The current administration's attacks on the free press are an alarming assault on a core principle of democracy. Attempting to discredit, defund, and disempower the media undermines the vital role journalism plays in holding power accountable and informing the public. Barring reputable outlets like The Associated Press from official events while granting favored access to partisan voices is a strike against transparency and fairness. The FCC chair openly targeting newsrooms over their reporting poses a chilling threat to free speech. And using regulatory approval as leverage to pressure corporations is an unacceptable breach of boundaries. These actions erode the independence of the Fourth Estate, which is essential for a healthy democracy. A vigorous and unfettered press is a check on abuses of power and a crucial source of truth. Undermining the media's ability to operate freely jeopardizes the public's right to accurate information and compromises the open discourse vital to self-governance. Protecting a free press must be a priority to uphold democratic ideals and prevent authoritarianism from taking root. Respectfully, a steadfast commitment to supporting ethical journalism and robust First Amendment protections is urgently needed.
