Reconsider misguided protectionist tariffs harming American consumers and businesses.

To: Sen. Cruz, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Houston, TX

April 5

These tariffs are misguided and will only serve to harm American consumers and businesses through increased costs and trade disruptions. The formula used to calculate the rates is overly simplistic, failing to account for critical factors like trade in services and year-to-year fluctuations in deficits. It applies a blunt, one-size-fits-all approach regardless of a country's actual trade barriers or practices. Furthermore, the arbitrary decisions like the 10% minimum rate and exclusions for certain products create inconsistencies and unintended consequences. Rather than escalating trade conflicts through unilateral tariff hikes, we should pursue a balanced approach focused on negotiating fair, modern trade agreements that lower barriers and create a level playing field for American workers and businesses. Protectionist policies will undermine economic growth and hurt the very people they claim to protect. I urge reconsideration of these destructive tariffs in favor of pro-growth, pro-trade policies that expand opportunities for all Americans.
