The Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings establish a crucial framework for educating all South Dakota students about the histories and cultures of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota nations. These lessons were carefully developed with input from tribal leaders, educators, and elders to foster greater understanding and appreciation of Native American heritage in our state. However, their current optional status means many students may not receive this vital knowledge. Mandating the teaching of the Essential Understandings across all public schools would ensure every child in South Dakota gains insights into the rich traditions and experiences of the original inhabitants of these lands. This represents an important step towards resetting state-tribal relations and building a more historically-aware society. I urge you to vote in favor of this bill, respecting the guidance of Senator Grove and the wishes of tribal representatives like Chairman Renville in prioritizing this long-overdue educational reform.
