Vote Yes on War Powers Resolution to Block Unauthorized Venezuela Strikes

To: Rep. Smucker, Sen. McCormick, Sen. Fetterman

From: A constituent in Lititz, PA

January 8

I am writing to urge you to vote yes on final passage of the War Powers Resolution next week to block the Trump administration's unauthorized military strikes in Venezuela. The January 8th procedural vote, which passed 52-47 with bipartisan support from Republican Senators Collins, Murkowski, Paul, Hawley, and Young joining Democrats, demonstrates growing congressional concern about this dangerous escalation toward an illegal and unnecessary war. This resolution is urgently needed to prevent further extrajudicial killings like the September 2nd Caribbean Sea strike that killed 11 people aboard a Venezuelan vessel. The administration claimed the vessel carried Tren de Aragua drug traffickers but has provided no evidence to support this assertion. Pentagon officials have struggled to identify any legal basis for the attack, and some Defense officials have labeled this an attack on civilians. Congress has not authorized military force against Venezuela or Tren de Aragua. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has advocated for continued aggressive action, stating "what will stop them is when you blow them up," while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has signaled his intention to continue such strikes. As Senator Rand Paul noted, this extrajudicial killing without trial violates fundamental principles of due process and the rule of law. It also raises serious concerns about potential retaliation for war crimes and sets a precedent for unchecked executive military action. The bipartisan procedural vote shows that constitutional concerns transcend party lines. I urge you to vote yes on final passage next week to reassert congressional authority over matters of war and peace. Additionally, I ask that you hold public hearings to investigate the legality of these strikes, call for the impeachment of Secretary Hegseth, demand the resignation of Secretary Rubio, and support articles of impeachment against President Trump for his repeated defiance of constitutional limits on executive power.
