I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent cuts to essential USDA food assistance programs and to urge you to take immediate action to restore this funding.
The Trump administration’s decision to eliminate over a billion dollars in funding that allowed schools and food banks to purchase food from local farms is both harmful and short-sighted. The USDA’s abrupt reduction of shipments through The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), without warning or explanation, further threatens the wellbeing of food-insecure families across the country.
These programs not only feed millions of Americans—including children and seniors—but also support rural economies and small farmers. With food insecurity rising due to inflation and the lasting impacts of the pandemic, this funding is more vital than ever. In 2023, 13.5% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity, with rural areas experiencing even higher rates.
Congress originally authorized this funding through the Commodity Credit Corporation Charter Act, and it should not be removed or redirected without congressional approval. I respectfully urge you to advocate for the full restoration of this funding and to safeguard it from future cuts.
