I am writing to express my outrage and absolute opposition to any plans to convert Camp Atterbury into an ICE detention facility — or, let’s call it what it is: a modern-day concentration camp. The very idea that a military installation in our state could be repurposed to warehouse human beings like cattle, often for the "crime" of seeking a better life, is both morally repugnant and historically shameful.
Have we learned nothing? The echoes of past atrocities grow louder when we start normalizing the mass incarceration of families, children, and asylum seekers in barbed wire camps under the guise of “detention.” Indiana should not be complicit in a national disgrace. Using a facility like Camp Atterbury in this way is a cowardly betrayal of our state's values and an insult to the very concept of human rights.
You were not elected to rubber-stamp cruelty. You were elected to represent people, not to enable a xenophobic, fear-driven agenda that dehumanizes immigrants and panders to political extremism. If you allow this to proceed — through action or silence — you are choosing to be on the wrong side of history.
Stop this now. Publicly oppose the use of Camp Atterbury for ICE detention. Fight it with every tool at your disposal. Or be prepared to face fierce and unrelenting resistance from your constituents — because we will not forget.
Do your job. Represent us — not the machinery of oppression.
